Please do not send me snail mail.

I know a lot of teachers like to set assignments where pupils send an actual letter to a person of their choosing. This causes me some problems.

First of all, if my publishers receive mail for me, they often wait till they have a large batch before they forward it on. This means I sometimes don’t get letters until they’re two or three months out of date.

Second, replying to normal mail is time consuming for me, and it can get quite expensive. You can’t send me an SAE because Australia Post doesn’t recognize US stamps. And while it costs you 55 cents to send me a letter, it costs me $2.10 to send a return. If a class of thirty writes to me, that can get pricey.

So if your teacher sets you an assignment like this, please include an email address so I can reply. Email is much quicker and easier for me. And be aware that it may take months for me to get your letter.
